Honduras continues to confront health problems such as a
high infant mortality rate (up to 42 per 1,000 live
births), high maternal mortality (up to 108 per 100,000
live births), malnutrition (45% of children in rural
areas are moderately or severely malnourished) and
HIV/AIDS. For Honduras, HIV/AIDS is an expanding health
problem. Honduras represents only 17% of Central
America’s population, yet it accounts for more than 60%
of the region’s HIV positive individuals representing
1.5% of the total Honduran population.
Health Volunteers teaching about nutrition
Access to health care services has improved in Honduras
in recent years; however, many communities still cannot
count on health services provided by the Ministry of
Health (MOH) or private voluntary organizations.
Approximately 30 health extension Volunteers are
currently working in the field, supporting health
centers, non-government organizations, community health
workers and private organizations educating community
members to solve these problems and to improve
health conditions. We focus on child and maternal care
and HIV/AIDS prevention and support.
