Language Training

Loyalty Oath

No person shall be assigned to duty as a Volunteer under this Act in any foreign country or area unless at the time of such assignment he or she possesses such reasonable proficiency as his or her assignment requires in speaking the language of the country or area to which he or she is assigned.

-The Peace Corps Act

Training starts in the United States during (Staging 2-3 days) and continues once trainees arrive in country (Pre-Service Training 8-12 weeks) and during the entire two years of service (In-Service Training). All training is directed by The Peace Corps with participation of host country organizations, former Volunteers, training contractors and other staff. Peace Corps training, especially in language training, is considered among the most respected in the world and the skills learned are highly valuable both during a Volunteer's time in country and once they return home.

Staging (2-3 days)

Staging provides trainees with information they need to adjust once in country and gives an idea of what to expect during the first few weeks. It is also when initial forms are processed. A sample schedule can be found here.

Pre-Service Training (8-12 weeks)

Pre-Service Training (PST) can be challenging. The technical, language, cultural, personal health and safety skills learned here are necessary to be a successful Volunteer. More than 90% of Trainees successfully complete Pre-Service Training to be sworn in as a Volunteer.

As part of PST, Trainees spend the first part of training together as a whole group and then second part of training broken into their projects to focus on more technical and Field-Based Training (FBT).

A sample schedule can be found here.

Language Training

Working in Spanish is critical to the Peace Corps mission in Honduras and so language training is critical to become a Volunteer. Language trainers in Honduras have been able to bring people who speak little or even no Spanish at all to a passing level by swearing-in (11 weeks) and fluent by Close of Service (27 months). In order to be eligible to be sworn in all Trainees must achieve a Spanish level of Intermediate-Medium - conversational and able to work, live and function in Spanish. If this level is not achieved the trainee may be allowed an additional month of coursework to improve or they may be asked to leave Honduras depending on effort.

The Peace Corps provides all resources available to make sure that every trainee has the ability to complete training by offering extra tutoring hours and private support. Trainees who successfully complete Pre-Service Training are then required by law to affirm an oath of loyalty to the United States.
